Texas Hill Country Trail Region

The trail system is based around 10 scenic driving trails created in 1968 by Gov. John Connally and the Texas Highway Department. In 1997, an initiative added heritage tourism attractions and communities both on and off the trail. This large and diverse area of Texas Hill Country Trail Region includes 19 counties. Be prepared to come upon peaceful lakes and healthy rivers buoyed by underground springs. Abundant wildlife roams the canyons, scenic hillsides, and waving wildflower meadows. notable limestone roads. A rich history left us with unique culture and joy. It runs from San Antonio to Bandera, over to Uvalde and up to Leakey, Kerrville, and Fredericksburg. Then the trail system continues through Stonewall to Johnson City and north to Llano before heading east along the lakes and skimming the west side of Austin.

Grape Creek Vineyard in Stonewall, Fredericksburg Winery, and the famous Wildseed Farms make it easy to stay around this territory. East of Fredericksburg in Johnson City is the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Park and Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site and Sauer Beckman Farmstead in Stonewall. The Texas Heritage Trails Program (THTP) is the Texas Historical Commission’s award-winning heritage tourism initiative. Its mission is “to protect and preserve the state’s historic and prehistoric resources for the use, education economic benefit, and enjoyment of present and future generations.” In 2005, the THTP received national recognition with the Preserve America Presidential Award.
